Former Airlie Beach man jailed for producing drugs

A FORMER Airlie Beach man has been jailed for producing ice.

The Supreme Court in Mackay was told the 35-year-old decided to make his own methylamphetamine because he thought it would be cheaper.

Colin Mark Cahill also saw it as a way to remove himself from the "criminal element" of buying the dangerous drug," defence barrister Bronwyn Hartigan said.

He also wanted to know what was in the drugs and was interested in the production process.

Police, who searched Cahill's Riordanvale home on December 17 in 2013, found a number of items related to the production of methylamphetamines including a fry pan and a condenser with attached distiller.

There were also pseudoephedrine-marked boxes at the residence and he was found in possession of 0.439 grams of methylamphetamines of which 0.0008 was pure, the court was told.

Cahill, who now resides in Toowoomba, pleaded guilty to producing and possessing dangerous drugs, possessing anything used in commission of a crime, unlawfully possessing a relevant substance or thing and possessing instructions for producing dangerous drugs.

Ms Hartigan said Cahill didn't touch drugs until 2008 after his father's death. He used methylamphetamines because it "numbed his pain".

Since 2013 he'd been using his savings to buy drugs. The bank repossessed his home, the court was told.

Cahill was jailed for 15 months to be released on parole in December this year.
