Man didn’t return car jack because of lockdown

A GLADSTONE labourer didn't return a car jack left in a car that he bought due to COVID-19 restrictions.

Carey Edwin Norman, 41, pleaded guilty in Gladstone Magistrates Court last week to stealing.

The prosecution told the court that on March 9, Norman had purchased a Holden Commodore for $250 cash.

Norman attended the address in the morning to make the payment, and made arrangements to collect the vehicle that afternoon.

However when Norman went to collect the car, the complainant was not present.

She said Norman had taken some other items that were not included in the sale - among those was a five-tonne car jack valued at $220.

Norman and the complainant had made arrangements for him to return the items, and on March 11, all the items were returned except the carjack.

On May 24, police attended Norman's address.

He said he knew he was in possession of the car jack and knew it wasn't park of the deal.

He was unable to locate the jack at the time but later handed it in to the Calliope police station.

Defence lawyer Cassandra Ditchfield said the seller was meant to remove the items before Norman collected the vehicle.

She said the period of time the seller was demanding the car jack be returned, was during COVID-19 lockdown when people weren't supposed to be travelling.

She said Norman hadn't even noticed the car jack was in the car, but accepted the seller had made him aware and arrangements had been made for him to return it.

Magistrate Bevan Manthey asked Norman how much he would lose from taking the day off work to come to court.

Due to the loss of income and the item being returned, Norman was not punished and no conviction was recorded.
