Majella awarded for tireless dedication to game

WHILE most Australia Day award winners receive the news before the ceremony, Majella Morris’ family kept hers a secret from her.

The St George Saints secretary was initially nominated by fellow club member Raelee Morris, and although Majella resisted at first, the nomination went through.

When the letter arrived, announcing she had won the Balonne Shire Council’s community service award, her husband intercepted it.

“When they were reading out the list of nominees on Australia Day, I was just thinking about how great these people were, they’ve all done great work in our communities,” Mrs Morris said.

“So when they said that I was the winner, I was in total shock.

“Not only did I not know because my family kept it a secret from me, but you always think there are other people more deserving.”

Mrs Morris’ involvement with the rugby league club spans back over 40 years, since she first arrived in town.

“I love being involved with the club, I’m a very, very proud St George rugby league person,” she said.

“I love the red and white.”

Mrs Morris was also heavily involved in organising the 100 year centenary celebrations, which took out the Australia Day Community Event award.

“We were all very excited about that, there were so many community events that were nominated, more than I realised,” she said.

“But we started planning our event five years ago, so it was pretty major.

“I was really impressed by the number of nominations at this years awards, it was definitely up on previous years. In all categories, clubs had gone to real efforts to nominate people.”
