Magpies snatch the win

Rugby League: The Miles Devils have lost out to the Mitchell Magpies in their first fixture of the year.

The match at Miles on Saturday got off to a tough start for the Devils, with the Magpies snatching an early lead of 12-0 until the 16th minute.

By the end of the first half the Devils trailed 24-6.

But the team rallied in the break to snatch the first points in the second half, quickly shrinking the gap to 24-20 before taking the lead.

But Devils coach Scott Ferguson said they couldn't hold the lead, with Mitchell taking the win 44-34.

"They've got a pretty handy young team, haven't been real strong in the past but they've got youth on their side by the look of it,” Ferguson said.

"We were pretty confident coming into the game but being the first game of the year our match fitness wasn't there so that told.

"It was a bit disappointing to not get the win but there's a bit there we can work on for future games.

"When a team scores more than 40 points we need to work on our defence a bit.”
