Roma's Fiona Flanders breaks Australian bench press record

FIONA Flanders bench-pressed more than her own weight to smash a national record - and she's just warming up.

The Roma resident now holds the Australian record for bench press in the Female Master 2 (50-59) category, easily beating the previous best on first try at a powerlifting event on the weekend.

The champion bodybuilder, with more gold than a Swiss bank, admitted she was only warming up when she lifted 60.5kg on her first try at the Iron Underground Powerlifting Gym in Brisbane.

"I had my three lifts and I beat the record first - I wanted to do 65kg, but my next tries didn't count because I got nervous and didn't do the move correctly," she said.

Flanders said powerlifting as an extra arm of her training regime for natural bodybuilding, which sees her hitting the gym twice a day.

"Because I train so hard for bodybuilding, that volume helps increase my strength," she said.

But the toughest battle with beating the record was fought before she'd even arrived in Brisbane.

"The most difficult part was getting my weight down to compete," she said.

"I just used everything I'd learned to get myself as close as possible to the weight range - every day I would do 50 sets of stairs."
