Landholders to discuss CSG rights

LANDHOLDERS in the Western Downs are being encouraged to learn about their rights in relation to coal seam gas mining.

Representatives from Shine Lawyers will be at the Dalby Leagues Club on Monday, July 23, discussing some of the challenges landholders face in the legal framework.

In a statement released by Shine Lawyers, property owners find themselves in long negotiations with CSG companies after amendments to the Petroleum and Gas Act were made in 2010.

Monday's meeting will begin at 10am, and is offering landholders the opportunity to ask questions about their rights in the negotiations with CSG companies.

Peter Shannon, from Shine Lawyers, said it was important landholders knew their rights when discussing contracts about their properties.

"It's important to get information into the public arena,” Mr Shannon said.

"As a lawyer and an advocate for people's rights, I'm deeply concerned about aspects of landholder rights being weakened by an imbalanced process that allows them to be taken advantage of.

"We need to protect the ability of landholders to protect themselves and to secure the best possible outcome for them.”

Mr Shannon said his practice believed the voices of landholders were not being heard enough.

"We also feel there is not enough balanced debate within the community concerning the roll-out of the CSG industry into closer settled areas,” he said.

"Proposed changes to the law seem designed to make that roll-out easier for the CSG industry. We aim to stimulate that discussion.”

The event will conclude at 2pm, with a lunch break in the middle.
