King of Taroom Cup
HORSE RACING: Spring racing got off to a bright start in Taroom at the weekend with of punters flocking through the gates of Dawson Jockey Club for the Santos GLNG Race Day.
More than 600 people turned out for what is one of the biggest days on Taroom's social calendar; a fine day of fashions on the field and entertainment as well as the highlight event - race number five, the Taroom Cup.
Trainer Jackie Compton took home the cup after jockey Cecily Eaton ran gelding King Ludwig over the line first in the 1400m open handicap.
Nothin' Zappenin' won the first race while Harvey Dent came first in race three and Lucky Ticket got over the line first in the fourth.
Taroom trainer Rodney Hay's Golfing got ahead of Champagne Warrior and Chilldown to win race two.
The daughter of well-known Tara horse trainer Ken Dowling, Ms Compton is based in Toowoomba but is well known in country racing circles.
She said it's always nice to have a win at a local track.
"I was brought up in country racing and we quite often go to Taroom and race and it's just nice to get back to the country.
"We like to win a county cup and we've had a bit of success over the years.
"We had two in the race and we were quietly confident one of them would win.
"King Ludwig is a a nine year old gelding and he's just a beautiful looking animal and he does everything right.
"We will back for the Tara Cup to see if we can win that for a third time.”
