Juniors ooze quality

Rugby League: The Chinchilla Showgrounds resembled a tent city at the weekend, as more than 500 junior players, officials and volunteers converged on the town for the annual Central Region QRL Junior Carnival.

The carnival features four representative teams; the South West Mustangs, Sunshine Coast Falcons, CQ Capras and Wide Bay Bulls.

The Mustangs team features players from the Roma, Toowoomba, Warwick and Western rugby league competitions.

The Mustangs U13s boys team had a stellar weekend, sweeping all before them to streak away and claim the trophy.

The side won all three of their matches and finished with a points differential of 100.

The U14s side finished second, with their only setback falling to eventual winners the CQ Capras 26-14 in the first round.

The Mustangs U16s boys side also finished second on the table, with the Sunshine Coast Falcons taking top spot.

On the girls side of the competition the first ever U14s Mustangs tried hard in each match, but were unable to record a win. The Falcons claimed the U14s girls division.

The Mustangs Under 16s girls team had greater fortune, winning the competition ahead of the Sunshine Coast.

Cameron Stallard from the QRL said it was a great weekend.

"It was a really successful weekend,” Stallard said.

"It's like a little adventure in itself in tent city for the young players.

"The quality of footy was great, there were some really close games, also a couple of blow-outs but that happens at any carnival.

"I was really impressed with all the teams, they only had a two to four week turnaround from when they were selected to get ready for this carnival.”

The players selected for the Central Crows will now compete in the QRL State Championship in July at Mackay.
