Junior rugby teams pay it forward by donating swags

CHILDREN who attended last weekend's Central Division junior rugby league carnival in Chinchilla have left behind a special gift for those in need this winter.

Close to 500 sleeping bags have been donated to the Dalby Salvation Army, after they had been used by children attending the carnival.

Western Downs Junior Rugby League event coordinator Terri Pallisier, who was the brains behind the good will project, who said she just thought it would be a "good idea”.

"There's no point in those kids taking sleeping bags they've probably already got at home,” she said.

"This way they'll be passed on to the homeless and domestic violence shelters in the region.

"They (the children) all packed them up and knew where they were going.”

Dalby Salvation Army Captain Jo Bulow said the swags were greatly appreciated by the Salvos, especially during the winter months.

"So we'll bring this (swags) back to Dalby and we also work closely with some of the other crisis organisations in Dalby,” she said.

"It means that we can make someone's life a little more comfortable in the short term until they find other resources.”

Western Downs Junior Rugby League president Tamara Pitt said it wouldn't have been possible without help from local businesses.

"It was great of Chinchilla Home Hardware to come on board as well,” she said.

"It's going to a great cause that can go in our area.

"It's awesome to be involved in it and be a part of it.”
