Innovation trumps tradition in MKR cook-off
ROSE and Josh made an emotional exit from My Kitchen Rules last night.
The reality cooking show's first mother and son team lost their sudden-death cook-off against young Perth couple Drasko and Bianca, whose wacky flavour combinations impressed the judges.
It was wannabe chef Drasko's risky menu versus the traditional South American flavours of Rose and Josh's beloved family classics.
It was an emotional roller coaster from the outset for Rose, who was in tears as she fretted over the empanadas for the first course.
"Every time we've cooked something that we love I always tend to muck it up," she said.
While the empanadas were tasty, they failed to impress next to Drasko's innovative take on fish and chips: sardines with crispy pig's ears.
"I've learned something today," judge Manu Feildel said.
"Who would've thought sardines and pig's ear would go on the same plate. I just love the texture; I love the flavour. This is probably one of the dishes I'm going to remember."
Not even perfectly cooked lamb could trump Drasko's unusual pairing of lobster with confit chicken wings and yellow curry sauce in the main course.
In the final course, Drasko and Bianca's tumeric ice cream outshone their torte, while Rose and Josh's banana ice cream let down their chocolate mousse.
Rose praised Josh, the show's youngest ever contestant at 19, for maturing over the course of the competition.
"I came in here with a boy but I'm leaving with a man," she said. "I'm so very proud of him."
The remaining teams will cook and serve food to airline passengers in tonight's challenge.
