Honeybears into finals contention after crushing Withcott

FOOTBALL: The Honeybears came into Sunday’s game in good form on the back of two convincing wins, without conceding a goal, and were looking to continue that good form against a Withcott side low on confidence.

The beginning of the game was very scrappy with both sides struggling to get control.

The Honeybears however, did manage to get on the score sheet after seven minutes when a blocked shot fell kindly to the feet of Sally Carroll who made no mistake putting the Honeybears ahead.

The lead was short lived however, as Withcott found space outside the Honeybears’ penalty area and made them pay with a venomous shot from distance, that looped over Honeybears’ goalkeeper Justeen Kruger.

Chinchilla then made a change, which ultimately changed the game for the Honeybears with Rachel De Jonge coming in to add some extra physicality to the Honeybears’ midfield.

It paid off immediately after De Jonge won the ball in the middle of the park then played the ball forward for Nikola Stevenson to slide an inch perfect pass through for Sally Carroll to get her second of the game.

Four minutes later, Carroll got her third goal of the game, tapping in after a mix up between goalkeeper and defender, before ending the first half with four goals – the Honeybears up 4-1.

In the second half, Withcott came out firing and made it 4-2 after winning a free kick outside the box.

The ball was floated to the far post and Heidi Jenkins rose unchallenged to head the ball home from close range.

A goal from Justeen Kruger and another to Carroll made it 6-2.

The Honeybears completed a much improved second half display making it 7-2 when Rachael Dennison latched onto a delightful through ball from Nikola Stevenson, and Dennison rifled an unstoppable shot into the bottom corner to score her first goal of the season.

The Honeybears ended the game 7-2 winners.

Other results also went their way which meant they jumped into finals contention – climbing to 4th spot on the table.

Coach Tim Taylor said the Honeybears started slowly and gave the opposition too much time on the ball.

“We were probably a little lucky to be 4-1 ahead at half time. We addressed a few things at half time and I thought the second half was much better, apart from their second goal, where we just went to sleep, but I was very happy with the response after that,” he said.

The Honeybears take on Highfields on Saturday night at the rec grounds. Kick off is at 5pm and the Bears kick off at 7pm. Please get down and support both sides.
