First he was arrested, then he stole and crashed the cop car
A MAN has stolen and crashed a police car in Bellemere this morning - without the car key.
Police officers were called to a premises on Bellmere Road around 7.15 this morning following reports that a man had broken into a house.
On arrival, the man was seen leaving in a vehicle which he abandoned on Clementine Street before fleeing on foot.
A man matching his description was located by officers on the nearby Bell Aire Avenue shortly thereafter and was placed in the rear of a police car.
Whilst they were conducting enquiries with neighbours, they observed the man had managed to open the rear window, climb out of the police car and was opening the driver's door.
As the man sat in the driver's seat and started the car, police entered the vehicle from the passenger's side.
As police struggled with the man the vehicle travelled across the road at low speed and crashed into park bollards where police were able to subdue him.
Initial investigations have revealed that officers outside the car had a proximity key in their pocket, which allowed the vehicle to start.
Two male officers suffered minor injuries as a result, and police will be reviewing the incident.
