Hamilton Island’s strict new COVID-19 measures

HAMILTON Island has gone into an enforced island-wide self-isolation period for three weeks to help ensure the safety of residents from coronavirus and anyone found breaking the rules may be asked to leave the island.

A spokesman from Hamilton Island said while there was currently no confirmed cases on the island, several residents fell into the ‘high risk’ category, prompting strict measures to be put in place.

Residents were given a notice about the measures last week, which included an order to stay home unless providing an essential service.

Residents are able to place online orders for food through the Hamilton Island IGA and products will be delivered to their home.

The pharmacy and medical centre will also remain open but will be managed with a ‘one in, one out rule’.

To help enforce the restrictions, the island will have an increased security presence where those found in breach will be issued an on-the-spot fine of $1000 and will asked to leave the island for the duration of the self-isolation period.

The spokesman said the measures were important to help keep the most vulnerable members of the community safe.

“In an effort to protect the community, Hamilton Island has implemented a series of self-isolation restrictions that will be in place for the next three weeks,” he said.

“Only those who provide essential services and hold prior approval to travel to the island will be permitted access during this time.

“The Hamilton Island community has been supportive of these restrictions. In addition to ongoing support, Hamilton Island Enterprises has worked to assist residents with their preparations for self-isolation and has offered free of charge food packs.

“Hamilton Island believes it is important to be cautious at this time given that the island does not have the medical resources or hospital facilities required to treat an outbreak of COVID-19.”

The self-isolation period came into place last night, one week after the island announced that no guests would be able to travel to the island for nearly a month due to the Australian Government’s restrictions on non-essential travel.
