Grandfather facing rape charge jailed for bail breaches

A man charged with the indecent treatment and rape of his 10-year-old granddaughter has fronted court for "blatant" breaches of his bail.

The man, who cannot be named for legal reasons, is facing six charges of indecent treatment and one charge of rape.

Appearing in Richlands Magistrates Court on Friday, he pleaded guilty to three breaches of bail.

Police prosecutor Senior Constable Noel Pedersen told the court the man was given bail orders on October 29 last year which required him to have no contact with the complainant under his bail orders.

On August 15, police found the man in a vehicle outside a home, with the girl inside the car.

Police interviewed the girl on August 19, where she said the man had been at her house between August 17-18.

"The child told police she travelled from her house with a relative on August 15… and saw the defendant," Sr Cst Noel Pedersen said.

Defence lawyer Rhys Foster said the man would occasionally provide groceries for the family of the girl and the pair had not seen each other for a long time.

"The defendant's wife has been assisting in the care of the girl… on these three occasions the defendant had contact with the girl," Mr Foster said.

Magistrate Aaron Simpson said the man's alleged offences were serious charges and a message needed to be sent for "blatant breaches" of bail orders.

"There's good reason why he should have no contact with that child, even just passive contact could be influential… if she has to give evidence," Magistrate Simpson said.

The man received a three-month jail sentence, suspended for 18 months.
