Grand Central announcement we're all waiting for

SPECULATION David Jones is opening in Grand Central has been strengthened by the department store's plans to expand.

With many new stores still to be announced in the redeveloped shopping centre there is still a possibility the retail giant will move into the second stage of Grand Central.

It has already been announced the second stage will host a Woolworths, Kmart and Big W and with the expansion covering about 45,000 sq m there is certainly room for a David Jones.

David Jones announced 10 new department stores will be opening across the country in the next five years, placing a huge bet on the strength of the Australian economy.

David Jones has already opened four new sites since the $2.2 billion Woolworths Holdings takeover and has another four currently in the pipeline.

The retailer announced late last month that it is locked in at a similar shopping centre expansion on the Sunshine Coast.

The new store is planned to open in Spring 2018 as part of the Sunshine Plaza's $400 million dollar redevelopment.

When the announcement was made David Jones CEO John Dixon said Queensland was an important market for the retailer.

Stage two of the Grand Central redevelopment is scheduled to open mid next year.
