Glenmorgan CWA celebrates the end of year

GLENMORGAN Country Women's Association celebrated the end of the year with a Christmas break-up barbecue last Friday.

The group gathered for its last meeting of 2017 before welcoming community members along for a fun night out.

Glenmorgan CWA member Bec Bidstrup said about 50 people attended.

"It's a great little event for the community and a small town, so we're really happy with the numbers that we got,” Mrs Bidstrup said.

As part of the event, the CWA hosted guest speakers from Save the Children and the new women's refuge opening in Roma.

"They had asked if they could come along and give a bit of a talk about domestic and family violence, and also just to talk a bit about the new refuge that is opening in 2018 in Roma,” Mrs Bidstrup said.

"We felt like it would be a nice tie-in to have them there to talk a little bit about the statistics. They spoke about how the incidences of family and domestic violence are actually higher in rural, regional and remote areas.

"The stats were one in three women will experience domestic or family violence in their lifetime, and that is higher in the bush.

"They just talked about what to look out for in your friends and potentially what to do if you suspect there is some domestic or family violence happening, so to contact them or the police and just talk to other family members.

"That was a bit of a sobering message I guess at a Christmas party, but it was also good for them to be able to speak to a group of men and women about it.”

The Glenmorgan CWA branch was established in 1948 and will celebrate its 70th anniversary next year.

Mrs Bidstrup said after a membership drive that resulted in about 12 new members signing up, the Glenmorgan CWA's future looked bright.
