AN eight-year-old girl and her mother have been left in hospital after a freak accident as they were trick or treating.

The two were struck by a ute which mounted the footpath, driven by a learner driver in Sydney's west

The girl and her 27-year-old mother were each taken to Westmead Children's Hospital.

Both are understood to be in a serious but stable condition.

The young girl suffered a head laceration, while the mother suffered injuries to her pelvis.

The 40-year-old learner driver escaped injury, as did her male passenger.

NSW Police are now investigating.
