George Christensen renews calls for ban on the burqa

GEORGE Christensen has had a busy morning, by 7am he had called for a ban on burqas in public places.

The member for Dawson shared story from Breitbart news about an armed gang in Manchester, England which carried out 10 raids wearing burqas to disguise themselves.

"If you think the burqa isn't a security threat, think again," Mr Christensen wrote on Facebook.

"This is another reason why this sexist garb of a foreign culture should be banned in public places in Australia."

The news story he was sharing, on the conservative-leaning website, refers to a Times story from England.

The story reports a gang from Manchester stole £206,000 (AU$360,000) worth of gems and £76,000 (AU$132,000) from Aldi in raids where they disguised themselves with burqas.

The crime spree was stopped by a bystander named Mark Cooper, who tripped up one of the gang members as he fled from a supermarket.

Mr Cooper jumped on the man until two other gang members attacked Mr Cooper with a machete.

In total the gang of five were sentenced to 87 years' imprisonment.
