FOOTBALL: Chinchilla Bears scraped by with a 3-2 win against Garden City last Sunday afternoon despite a controversial line call creating some tension on and off the field.
Captain Jonty Calleja said the Bears did a fair job of playing the ball around and put a lot of work into tiring their short-sided opposition out.
With regards to a handful of contentious calls,Calleja said it always came down to interpretation of the rules, as well as how many officials the Toowoomba-based football competition could provide to regional clubs.
"If Toowoomba isn't willing to send more officials, it make it hard for us to look unbiased when you have Chinchilla club members running lines,” he said.
The Honeybears managed to demolish Gatton Redbacks 10-0 with a new formation allowing the women's team to make it into the top four teams on the Toowoomba Football League.
Coach Tim Taylor said their new formation on Sunday worked to their advantage.
"We wanted to ensure we had controlled possession and options off the ball,” he said.
The women's team will be joined by several future Honeybears from the Under 13s girls football squad to help boost team numbers at trainings which have begun to dwindle as the season progresses.
Taylor hand picked Ayva Clarke, Nikita Wilson, Macy Gaze and Jorja Keating to train up with the Honeybears in the hopes of making their future transition in years to come more efficient.
"We still have a mountain to climb but this week's major win against the Redbacks has helped us close the gap slightly and allowed us into the top four teams on the ladder, which is a great feeling,” he said.
