Fisherman clung to dad's dead body after boating tragedy

A FISHERMAN clung to his father's dead body as he waited for rescue after a boat's maiden voyage ended in tragedy off the Queensland coast, rescuers say.

Three men were thrown from their boat and into the cold ocean 10-20 nautical miles north east of Cape Moreton on Sunday morning.

A 57-year-old Beachmere man died, with his son and a friend airlifted to the Princess Alexandra Hospital suffering hypothermia.

Queensland Government Air Rescue air crew officer Daren Parsons said a rogue wave knocked out the 5-6 metre fishing boat's engine before a second wave capsized the vessel.

The men on board tried and failed to get life jackets and other floatation devices out of the sinking boat but fortunately managed to find a floating emergency beacon (EPIRB).
