UPDATE: SAMSUNG Australia will replace, refund or repair any purchased Samsung Galaxy Note7 consumers don't feel safe using.

Samsung has also suspended sale of the phone after a battery fault caused 35 units to catch fire overseas. 

No phone has caught fire in Australia.

South Korea and the USA had 17 faulty phones each while Taiwan had one.

The company has identified a rare flaw in the phone's battery that, under certain circumstances, could cause the battery to explode or ignite.

Samsung has sold approximately 1.5 million devices worldwide since it's release on August 19 and the 35 faulty phones equates to just a 0.0024 per cent failure rate.

All were manufactured by third parties according to Samsung.

All customers who have already purchased the phone will either be able: to return it for a new battery; replace it with a new Note7; or return it for a refund.

The Note7 has sold at more than double the rate of its predecessor the Note5 in Australia.

Samsung Electronics Australia is today taking the proactive and voluntary step to recall 51,060 Galaxy Note7 smartphones.

The recall is in response to the recent announcement by Samsung Electronics regarding isolated battery cell issues with the Galaxy Note7.

Samsung Electronics Australia advises all customers who use a Galaxy Note7 smartphone to power down their device, return it to its place of purchase and use an alternative device until a remedy can be provided.

Customers who have purchased a Galaxy Note7 from Samsung are entitled to choose a new Galaxy Note7 (and a courtesy device until replacement Galaxy Note7 stock arrives) or a full refund.

The delivery of a replacement Galaxy Note7 to customers is expected within three to four weeks.

Alternatively, customers who have not purchased a Galaxy Note7 from Samsung can approach their place of purchase to discuss their remedy options.

"The safety and ongoing satisfaction of our customers is our top priority," said Richard Fink, Vice President IT & Mobile, Samsung Electronics Australia.

"We know our Galaxy Note7 customers are our most loyal customers and we are taking a proactive approach to support them.

"We are asking customers to contact Samsung or their place of purchase to arrange a suitable courtesy smartphone or refund. Courtesy devices will become available from this Wednesday (September 7, 2016)."

"Galaxy Note7 smartphone owners can visit the place of purchase of their device or call Samsung Customer Service on 1300 362 603."

 

EARLIER: Retailers are suspending sales ahead of an expected global recall, the Brisbanetimes.com.au reports.

Samsung has confirmed they will be doing a "thorough inspection" of the unit.

"We will share the findings as soon as possible," a Samsung spokeswoman told Fairfax media.

Photos of the new phone having been allegedly torched while charging have reached social media.

Locally,  Telstra, Optus, Vodafone, and JB Hi-Fi have pulled the phone from their shelves.
