A simple hug gave Doodlebug the kangaroo worldwide fame

FOR the little Northern Rivers joey Doodlebug, fame was as close as a teddy bear's hug.

Doodlebug is a young eastern grey kangaroo who has been in the care of a Northern Rivers animal carer, known only as Gillian, since he was found abandoned weeks ago.

He was spotted cuddling his teddy by Tim Beshara, an advisor to Tasmanian Greens Senator Peter Whish-Wilson, photographed and sent out to the world via Twitter.

Social media being what it is, Doodlebug quickly became famous - and it's pretty obvious why.

"I figured it would be shared in Australia but I've been shocked to see the image reaching as far as Brazil and Russia. I've even had American morning shows using it on air," Mr Beshara told the Daily Mail's Nelson Groom.

The Daily Mail reported Gillian was part of the WIRES network of animal carers and was based somewhere on the Northern Rivers.

However, a spokeswoman for WIRES Northern Rivers said the organisation was not aware of either Doodlebug or Gillian. The Daily Mail quoted Mr Beshara saying Doodlebug had been nursed back to health since he was found and was now hopping free "and coming back for the occasional feeding or cuddle".
