A MAN has been charged after a River Heads street was sent into lock down while explosive experts searched a Kingfisher Dr home.

A 31-year-old River Heads man was charged with possessing firearms, explosives, dangerous drugs and utensils.

Maryborough Criminal Investigation Branch Detective Senior Constable Glen Dehnert said the Explosives Ordinance Response Team, or bomb squad, from Brisbane searched the home from about 10pm on Thursday night.

The search was not completed until about 2am Friday morning.

"Specialists were called in to conduct a search of the property which was then regarded safe," he said.

Snr Cont Dehnert said police will allege they found a range of firearms, ammunition and explosives.

He said the explosives found were industrial type explosives.

The quiet street was shut down from 10am on Thursday morning after police received a tip-off about firearms.

The area was blocked off by uniformed police and marked cars until the explosives experts arrived later in the night.

Police declared a Public Safety Preservation Act area about 4.20pm on Thursday, meaning neighbours were unable to access their homes.

The man will appear in Hervey Bay Magistrates Court on January 28.
