BMW trashed in paint stripper attack
AN 85-year-old man's prized car has been splattered with paint stripper at Maroochydore in what may have been a revenge attack aimed at his son.
George Chapman's $80,000 BMW X5 will need a complete respray after the paintwork on all but one panel was scarred by paint stripper sometime between 10.30pm Thursday and 6am this morning.
Mr Chapman, who recently lost his wife, had arrived to visit his son, Col, a child recover specialist, and his family less than 48 hours before.
The BMW was the third car vandalised at Col's address since he moved in two months ago.
Col said he believed the attack on his father's car was aimed at him "but they didn't get me - they got an 85 year old man whose wife passed away last month."
He believes the attack was targeted at him given the recent damage to two other cars and a message sent to him the night before which referred to him getting a new car.
Less than a fortnight ago, his father's other car was splattered with paint, possibly undercoat, while parked in their driveway, and prior to that, a bolt was drilled through the tyre of another car.
"We're under siege," he said.
Col said the undercoat on the second car had been removed with a cut and polish but the family expect a a respray for the X5 to cost up to $15,000.
Col Chapman and his father, George, inspect damage to George's car, which was splattered with paint stripper overnight.
The repair is a huge slug for George, who had not got around to insuring the car because his wife died shortly after he bought it.
George, while upset about the damage to his pride and joy, was hiding it well.
"I'm not sure what to think," he said.
The vandalism has been reported to police.
Col said he would install lighting and security cameras in a bid to deter future attacks.
