Fishermen in banana boat saved off coast after days at sea

NINE fishermen have been rescued by Australian Border Force after drifting in the Torres Strait for six days without food and fuel.

The 7m banana boat was spotted floating along Warrior Reef - situated north of Thursday Island and west of Badu Island, in the Torres Strait - by a Maritime Border Command helicopter on Friday.

An Australian defence vessel, the Cape Fourcroy, met the banana boat and supplied its crew with food water and fuel.

The fishermen, who were all uninjured, were able to return to Papua New Guinea in their refuelled boat.

"While our focus in the Torres Strait is protecting Australia's waters from maritime security threats, the presence of the dedicated crews of our MBC vessels means we are never far away when emergencies like these occur," Rear Admiral Peter Laver said.

"The waters of the Torres Strait can be treacherous and these men are very lucky that MBC located and intercepted them when we did."
