Donna Steele murder: Police to search croc-infested creek

THE brother of slain Queensland mum Donna Steele has made an impassioned plea for information about his sister's death.

Jason says the family is "absolutely devastated" and her two sons - aged eight and 10 - miss her terribly after the body of the 42-year-old was found near Cooktown on Sunday.

"A lot of people knew Donna. She was a loved person around town, surely someone must know something," he said.

Even a "tiny" bit of information could help in finding answers to who committed this "horrible act", he said.

As reported earlier, police divers are expected to search the creek where her body was found this afternoon.

Ms Steele was last seen at the local IGA about midday last Wednesday. Detective Inspector Geoff Marsh said police believe she came home after her time in town, but did not know if that's where she died.

Insp Marsh said she probably knew her killer.

Divers from Townsville and Brisbane are due to search Isabella Creek at Leggett's Crossing, about 25km west of Cooktown, this afternoon.

Officers patrolled the creek on Tuesday night in a bid to spot crocs that may be present in the creek and have been talking to local landholders and residents.

There are established techniques to try to scare away crocodiles, including the use of engine noise and nets and the divers are making their final preparations in Cooktown this morning.
