DITCHING DAIRY: Are you really lactose intolerant?

THE CSIRO has expressed public health concerns after a study found one in six Australians was avoiding milk and dairy foods.

The joint CSIRO and University of Adelaide survey discovered 74% of respondents made the choice to avoid cramps, bloating or wind.

Far fewer participants said they avoided dairy because they disliked the taste or they thought it was fattening.

CSIRO behavioural scientist Bella Yantcheva said the scale of people avoiding dairy without a medical reason was very concerning, especially for women.

"It means there is potential for nutritional deficiencies or imbalances, or the risk that an underlying health condition could be going untreated," Ms Yantcheva said.
