Diamonds shooter shines in Quad Series win
NETBALL: A record goal haul from Caitlin Bassett has helped the Diamonds win the Netball Quad Series.
Bassett scored 53 goals from 60 attempts to eclipse her own mark of 49 goals in a Test match.
That proved the difference in a thrilling 60-55 decider against arch rival New Zealand at Melbourne's Margaret Court Arena.
While the final margin was five goals, little separated the teams for most of the game.
The Silver Ferns went in front with five minutes left but the home side struck back quicly before pulling clear in the dying minutes.
It was 30-30 at half-time and with Bassett shooting superbly, the Diamonds opened up a five-point gap in the third quarter.
But Queensland-born shooter Ameliaranne Ekenasio and her strike partner Bailey Mes kept the Kiwis in it and there was only a point in it going into the final quarter.
The visitors pushed the hosts all the way but Bassett's shooting skills helped them home in a thriller to take the inaugural quad series crown.
