Woman tells magistrate 'I'd rather a jail term thanks'

THOUGH offered a period of probation, a woman who pleaded guilty before Toowoomba Magistrates Court to assaulting a shopping centre security officer said she'd prefer a suspended jail sentence.

Amanda Cecile Coleborn, 39, told Magistrate Graham Lee she intended leaving Toowoomba in a couple of months to tour Australia with her partner and would rather have a jail sentence hanging over her head than remaining in the city to complete a probation order.

Police prosecutor Des Neijens told the court Coleborn had become involved in an argument with a man outside a fruit shop at an Ashmore shopping centre on November 24, last year, prompting a security officer to intervene.

As she was being escorted from the centre, she became abusive toward the officer and swung a number of punches at him which he fended off.

However, she had then dug her fingernails into his arm and scratched him, causing his arm to bleed, Senior Constable Neijens said.

The self-represented Coleborn pleaded guilty to assault occasioning bodily harm.

She said she had been on medication for bipolar disorder as well as valium which hadn't mixed well with the alcohol she had drunk that day.

She told the court she remained on valium but had stopped taking the other medication as she didn't believe in bipolar and thought that medication had prompted her to act the way she had which was out of character for her.

The defendant said due to the medication she had little recollection of the event.

She also blamed the medication for a shop-lifting incident at a St George supermarket on March 25 to which she also pleaded guilty.

Mr Lee told her the assault was a serious incident but that he would accede to her request for a suspended sentence.

He sentenced Coleborn to three months in jail but suspended the term in full for 15 months.
