Country cop rescues orphaned joey from busy highway

THERE'S rarely a dull day on the front line of policing, with the job requiring officers to take on a number of roles during their general duties.

Goondiwindi police Constable Vaughan Clacher was reminded of that when patrolling the region recently.

Const. Clacher was on shift when he spotted an injured kangaroo on the side of the road.

It had been hit by a car, suffering significant injuries.

With road safety in mind, Const. Clacher stopped the patrol car and went to move the kangaroo from the roadside to ensure it didn't jump in front of other traffic when he assessed the animal should be euthanized.

What he didn't expect was a joey to have survived the impact with the vehicle and it poked its head out.

He removed the joey from its pouch and wrapped it in a blanket before taking it to the Macintyre Animal Rescue Services where it a foster home was found for the joey.

"It just goes to show that you never know what this job has around the corner," Const. Clacher said.

"You end up going to a job and expect one thing and something else totally different happens."
