Birthplace of Mary Poppins author bought by council

THE birthplace of PL Travers, the author of Mary Poppins, has been purchased by the Fraser Coast Regional Council.

Fraser Coast councillor George Seymour confirmed the news that the council had purchased the property, on the corner of Kent and Richmond Sts, for $420,000.

Cr Seymour said the council was working on plans for the building's future, saying it could be a key attraction for the region.

"It will be a public building in some form," Cr Seymour said.

He said a decision had not been made about the future use of the building.

"The heritage-listed building is very important in telling the region's history and its association with Mary Poppins gives it an added charm," Cr Seymour said.

"I am very pleased that this landmark building is in public hands.

"It will be well cared for and a joy to visit and learn about its connection to Mary Poppins.

"We will be developing plans for its future use, it will be a key attraction for Maryborough."
