Condamine Cods nab three wins against USQ

Rugby Union: The Condamine Cods are celebrating after wins against USQ on the weekend as they look to the upcoming finals. The A and B Grade Cods, and the C Grade River Rats went up against USQ in Toowoomba on Saturday afternoon, with the River Rats claiming the win 17-12.

Meanwhile the B Grade team dominated their match, with a resounding 52-5 victory. It was a tighter competition for the A Grade, but again the Cods came out on top, winning on the buzzer 27-24.

Condamine Cods club president Doug McNicholl said the wins will see all sides in the finals coming up this weekend in Dalby.

"It's also worth mentioning that the Condamine Codettes had their last round game as well for the year,” McNicholl said.

"They... ended up in second place after the end of the regular season behind USQ, and they make their way into the finals now.”

And the wins aren't the only reason the club deserves a pat on the back, after taking out some top places at the Darling Downs Rugby Awards Night in Toowoomba on Saturday.

"(Codette) Bonnie Penfold took out the inaugural women's highest points scorer and top try scorer award, she got 37 tries throughout the year,” McNicholl explained.

"The Cods club in general, which is the Codettes and the men's side, were

awarded the Ambulance Shield, which is awarded by the referees to the club that has had the most club spirit... so that's a great award as well.”

For McNicholl, it's pleasing to see the club consistently make the finals during the last five years.

"No doubt it's a great feat for a club in our region where we just don't have the population that the larger towns do and we're up competing with them.”
