Codettes bow out to Toowoomba Bears in grand final

The Codettes Under 17 Rugby 7s team just fell short of taking home the premiership.

Condamine's Tink Morgan scored the first try in the first minute which sent the Bears into shock.

However, they quickly managed to take control of the game with two successive tries.

Another try in the second half to Nell Tomlinson from Meandarra at great speed got the Codette girls excited again, however Bears ended the game with some high paced moves and more tries, with a high level of fitness being their strong point.

In an extremely physical game, the Codettes gave it their best but unfortunately went down to the highly trained Bears girls 10-31.

After a brilliant season for the Codettes, Amelia McMeniman was awarded most valuable player, Tink Morgan most points scored and Jess Wehl most improved. Team manager, Miranda Ronnfeldt said Alice Feez and Sarah Tomlinson did a fantastic job coaching the girls each week and being there to support them at their weekend games.

"I would personally like to also thank Mr Rick Lingard and TAS (Toowoomba Anglican School) for allowing the girls to use their oval for training,” Ronnfeldt said.

"I also need to give a huge thanks to the three Chinchilla girls, Lily Cook, Skye Cross, Kenslee Bakert for helping us out and a big thanks to their parents as well for the commitment.”

"I have to take my hat off to our boarders, Lucy Ronnfeldt who was our captain, Nell Tomlinson, Tink Morgan, Amelia McMeniman, Jess Wehl, Zara Bambling, Paige Carpenter, Gracie Vary, Georgie Horn and Georgia Grimley. It's a big commitment to make when you're in your final years of schooling and the girls all put in a lot of effort and time which made my job a lot easier this season.

"This was the first time Downs Rugby have run a girls rugby 7s under 17s tournament and it's been a wonderful opportunity for our girls to learn the game, their confidence has just grown from week to week.”

Condamine girls, Lucy Ronnfeldt and Tink Morgan have also been selected in the Under 17s Downs Rugby 7s squad, with a good chance they will travel to the state tournament later this year.
