Chinchilla Bulldogs maul Miles Devils
RUGBY LEAGUE: An impressive defensive effort from the A-grade Chinchilla Bulldogs kept Miles Devils scoreless last weekend.
Bulldogs claimed the win, 36-0 after starting the scoring only minutes into the match.
Bulldogs fullback Romada Barnes caught a high ball from a Miles bomb in the eighth minute, and offloaded to Matt Edwards who then ran almost the length of the field to score the first try.
Three minutes later, Jeff Gilbert chipped through, regathered and stepped
two opposition players to score the second try of the night.
In a near replay of his first effort, Barnes caught another high ball but this time backed himself to run the length of the field to score the third try at the 30th minute.
Good lead-up work from forwards Tom Dodd, Danny Burke and Hayden Bender two minutes before half-time resulted in a try to Bowdy Wheldon.
Chinchilla went into the sheds at half time with a 24-nil lead.
Both sides came out after the break and worked hard defensively for 27 minutes until Chinchilla Bulldogs' Nick Mutch kicked downfield and Barnes was once again on the spot to scoop up the ball and score the try under the posts.
With three minutes remaining until full-time, another offload from Burke saw Bender score under the posts to secure the win for Chinchilla.
Matt Edwards had a great night with the boot - converting all six tries.
It was no surprise that Barnes was named the Black Toyota Player's Player.
Bulldogs coach Anthony Horswood was impressed with his team's defensive effort and is looking forward to the second round in the RDRL.
This Saturday, Bulldog Park again hosts a home game against St George.
This game starts the second round of the RDRL season, with Chinchilla Bulldogs positioned well on the competition ladders in all grades.
