CHINA has hired 20,000 academics to build an online encyclopedia to rival Wikipedia - but a key difference is that the public won't be allowed to edit the site.

The project aims to ensure only the official version of events is included.

The regime often blocks sites such as Facebook and Twitter and has at times denied access to Wikipedia's English and Chinese versions.

Because of political taboos, topics such as the Tiananmen Square massacre, the outlawed Falun Gong spiritual group and the Dalai Lama (pictured) are off limits to the Chinese people.
