Your Story: Carer does his best for mum

I MOVED to Tannum Sands from Tasmania to become a carer for my mum.

I have been doing this for the past two years.

Mum is 57 and has severe arthritis in her right knee (bone on bone).

She also has spurs in her back and various mental conditions such as bipolar and depression.

In the past two years she has gone from walking un-aided to using a walking stick and now uses a wheelie walker.

She has regular appointments with an orthopedic surgeon about her knee and fortnightly appointments with her doctor to have scripts refilled.

I've been trying my best to do what I can without a car and with help from community organisations, but I think it has come to the point where I need a car as it has become too hard to care for her on foot.

I walk every day to pick up her medication as she has had trouble taking them in the past. I walk to get her groceries when help isn't available from community organisations.

She needs a total knee reconstruction and an operation on her back and is on a waiting list for both.

I have been trying to think of a way I could afford a car on my own but have come to the conclusion that it is almost impossible on a carer's pension, so I'm asking for help.

I have recently started a Go Fund Me campaign to try to raise the money to buy a cheap car for mum and I.

The car will be sold when I am no longer looking after mum and the money will be donated to charity.
