Boys from the bush join fire fighting force

AS UNPRECEDENTED bush fires continue to devastate properties and threaten lives and properties throughout Queensland and New South Wales, firefighters from Charleville and Morven have responded to calls for back up.

Three firefighters from Charleville Queensland Fire and Emergency Services Auxiliary and one from Morven are, as of yesterday, on the strike force to go to Grantham.

“At this stage they’re there for a week,” Charleville QFES captain Brad Steer said.

“We always get calls when there are fires in other parts of the state, it’s just a matter of if anyone is available.

“These blokes have taken leave of their own employment, which is incredible.”

Captain Steer said it was a commendable effort for his men to volunteer their own time to help their southeastern neighbours.

“I’m pretty proud of them - they don’t think twice about it,” he said.

“As we help our own communities, we will be there to help out other communities.

“It’s an experience within themselves as well, we don’t have those sorts of fires out here so it’s a learning opportunity for them.”

The four firefighters are due back west on Saturday.

“While there are many people down there, it’s all hands on deck to relieve crews to prevent fatigue,” he said.

Currently, more than 31 fire warnings are in place throughout Queensland.
