OPINION: Blame the vaccines; not the anti-vaxxers
I AM wondering if readers are aware of the science of the pertussis (whooping cough) vaccination.
According to most major health organisations, the resurgence of whooping cough in recent decades has little to do with "anti-vaxxers" and everything to do with vaccine failure.
The immunity induced by the vaccine wanes much more quickly than first thought and the vaccine does not protect against what are now the most prevalent (pertactin deficient) strains of the bacteria.
A new pertussis vaccine is urgently needed.
Vaccines are an important public health measure and should be available to any and all who want them.
However, they are never going to be perfect and the constant evolution of viruses and bacteria means that we need to keep ourselves abreast of all the latest, most accurate scientific evidence before engaging in any debate about this issue.
