Big seas loom as wind strengthens

OVERNIGHT temperatures dropped to just 8.1C at the Sunshine Coast Airport this morning, signalling the start of a week of cold weather ahead.

Temperatures began falling rapidly from mid-evening Friday, eventually reaching 8.7C at Beerburrum at 6.30am, 9.9C in Nambour at 4am and 10.2C at Tewantin at 6.30am.

The Bureau of Meteorology has forecast a warmer 11C at the airport into Sunday but temperatures will then fall back into single figures through to Friday.

Forecaster Aditi Sharan said a trough would come through on Sunday, bringing significant increases in wind strength and leading to progressively falling temperatures as they shifted south.

A strong wind warning is in place for mariners, with winds to 50km/h offshore.

Swell on the beaches is expected to increase to two metres by Monday afternoon and from two to three metres offshore.

Today is expected to reach a 27C peak on what is a sunny day with light winds increasing to 15-20km/h from the west.

Sunday will also be sunny, with winds reaching 40km/h from the south-west through the morning and a temperature of 22C.

It will be a cold 7C into Monday ahead of a cool 21C maximum on a sunny day with south westerlies gusting from 20-30km/h before dropping out in the evening.

Tuesday morning is expected to bring the coldest temperatures of the current cycle, falling to 6C overnight ahead of a day-time peak of 22C, with winds dropping out. With that will be an elevated fire risk.

Expect sunny skies and light winds Wednesday, with a 7C overnight minimum ahead of a 23C peak.

Similar conditions are expected Thursday before a partly cloudy Friday sees temperatures warm to 10C overnight ahead of a 25C maximum.
