BETH Mooney's birthday bash led Brisbane Heat to a close five-wicket win over Melbourne Renegades.

The opener struck five boundaries at a scorching Allan Border Field in her stand of 45, but Mooney's knock was the only real resistance in the Heat's chase.

The Heat was chasing only 103 runs to win, but were forced to fight for the reasonably small total by a determined Renegades outfit.

Brisbane's struggle against the smaller total, which required a run rate of just more than five per over, reflected Mooney's comments late last week.

When asked about the Hobart Hurricanes's record chase against Melbourne Renegades in their men's Big Bash League match, Mooney said the higher total "was almost better to chase" than a lower total.

"It's probably better chasing 220 rather than a smaller total because you know you just have to hit," Mooney said.

"You don't get the same pressure or false sense of security.

"But (that game) was unbelievable, when a team makes 220 in a T20 you wouldn't expect it to be chased down but Ben McDermott played really well.

"It's the best time of year to be a cricketer."

It was left to former skipper Delissa Kimmince to hit the winning boundary from the only ball she faced.

Earlier, Jemma Barsby took 4-13 from three overs, two wickets of which were stumpings via Mooney, to restrict Melbourne Renegades to 102.
