Bell's green team receives rare award

FEW students in Australia are more passionate about the environment than the students at Bell State School.

Since 2014, the school has made it a mission to educate their students on sustainable practises, while improving the environment around them.

Their vegetable patch is a popular source of produce for the community, while their efforts around the region involve re-establishing native plants into the area.

The school has become just the second in Australia to receive the silver award for the Eco-Schools Keep Australia Beautiful program.

Eco-schools team leader Lenore McLaren said it was fantastic the school achieved the rare feat.

"The award means we are majoring in three of the themes set out in the program,” she said.

"We major in biodiversity in the community, litter and waste and a theme called fair-go global.”

The vegetable patch an re-introducing native species into the environment were just a pair of ways the school received the silver award.

The program is also linked into the school curriculum, which Mrs McLaren believes is essential learning for the students.

"I think they need to know about sustainable practice for the future, because our resources are going to run out and they need to know how to recycle, re-purpose and reuse things,” she said.

Students and staff at the school are now aiming to achieve the highest award possible in the program, the Green Flag Award.
