SEASONED local angler Mick Johnson has hooked a place in the top three at the Basstasstic tournament Round One Qualifier at Boondooma Dam at the weekend.

Johnson placed third to take home $700 worth of prize money as well as putting an extra $650 in his pocket by winning two jackpot rounds.

The catch-and-realease event saw 23 anglers compete over three sessions for a total of 15 hours, as well as 10 hours of pre-fishing before officially casting their lines on Saturday.

Competition proved tough, with Johnson's biggest fish measuring in at 466mm, only two millimetres less than the winning bass.

Johnson said competing at his home dam gave him an advantage over other anglers, some of who had come from as far as Muswellbrook and Gladstone.

"For sure, fishing at Boondooma gave me an edge. It's where I always fish and you know the dam well - you know what the fish are going to do,” he said.

"There are fellas there that have fished it before but they only fish it once a year.”

Johnson heads to Lismore to compete in the second round at Richmond River at the end of April and is currently looking for sponsorship, anyone who is interested can contact him on 0437 030 360.
