Anti-vaccine groups say they are pro-choice

THE Australian Vaccination Skeptics Network has denied they oppose all children being vaccinated.

Speaking to a Queensland parliamentary committee on Thursday the group said stopping unvaccinated children from attending childcare centres denied parents choice.

AVSN member Brett Smith said the proposed legislation took away choice from parents about what vaccines their children should have.

But Queensland chief health officer Dr Jeannette Young  told the committee clusters of unvaccinated children represented a real public health threat.

She said if a highly contagious disease such as measles broke out in a childcare centre with low vaccination rates it could "gain a foothold in the community".

Queensland Nurses Union secretary Beth Mohle told the committee anti-vaccination groups should be engaged rather than attacked.
