ALDI plans to ignite shopping showdown

GERMAN supermarket ALDI has declared their intent to set up shop in Dalby, with the company eyeing off the old Beaurepaires store and a couple of surrounding land blocks for the potential site.

An ALDI spokesperson has confirmed the plans, and believes the Dalby community will welcome the store with open arms.

"We are currently investigating a potential site in Dalby and working through planning requirements and we will continue to update the community as our plans progress,” the spokesperson said.

"We know there is a strong appetite among residents in the area for an alternative place to shop and we are eager to show them the benefits ALDI can bring to their wallets and lifestyles.”

Deputy Mayor Andrew Smith said an application has been lodged to council and has been passed onto relevant referral agencies.

Mr Smith said at this stage the council is waiting for approval from these agencies, particularly Transport and Main Roads.

"Main Roads came back with a request for information from ALDI and I've been told ALDI has responded,” Mr Smith said.

"The request for information was fairly extensive, but one of major concerns was traffic movement and potential congestion.

"It can be a huge financial cost, and any issues placed by Main Roads will be ALDI's burden.

"Theoretically if it cost $10 million to upgrade the roads around the potential site that could be enough for ALDI to turn their back on the idea.”

Mr Smith couldn't say for certain when the proposal would be given the green light, but is confident ALDI will only bring positives to the Dalby community.

"It's difficult to say when it will be approved; we have opened the pathway for development through the approval process and done this as quickly and efficiently as possible, it's in ALDI's hands.

"It's about jobs and our economy; and it will hopefully bring about positives in both areas because when people are employed they play a much larger role in the community.”

If the plans go ahead it will mean Dalby will have Woolworths, Coles, Foodworks and ALDI all fighting for customers.
