Alarming hit rate for drug driving operation

POLICE are alarmed by the number of iced-up drivers being detected on roads around Chinchilla.

Constable Justin Drier is heading up a police operation which has so far nabbed nine drug drivers from 15 tests in 27 days - a hit rate of 60%. He said all the drivers had tested positive for methylamph- etamine, also known as "ice”.

"It's very alarming that we're only getting people testing positive for ice,” Const Drier said.

The operation was rolled out after police statistics between June 1 and October 1 showed local officers conducted 51 drug tests and detected 17 drug drivers in the Chinchilla division.

Roma and Dalby Road Policing Command are assisting Chinchilla police, which will run for another five months.

"We follow local intel that leads us to possible drug-affected persons,” Const Drier said.

"If those persons are seen driving they will be pulled over and subjected to a roadside drug test.

If anyone has information on a possible drug driver or someone in possession of drugs, contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or Chinchilla police on 4672 9666.
