LAST WEEK, many regional Queensland towns saw hundreds of motorcycles pass through their street, but very few knew the cause these riders were supporting.

The Southern Cross Association held their major fundraising event of the year, the annual five day Poker Run through country Queensland, in aid of Spina Bifida Hydrocephalus Queensland.

Covering a large area in a short time frame, the ride encourages people from the state to participate.

The ride stopped in Dalby last Monday, September 4, before heading off for the rest of the trip.

Jason Rose from Rockhampton was one of the many riders on the tour, and said it was a great way to raise money for a valuable cause.

"We started at Charlton and used local Lions organisations where we stop to help out with some of the catering and the fundraising,” Mr Rose said.

"At the end of the trip there is a big donation handed out.

"The disease I believe is close to some of our members and it also helps out a lot of the Western townships, riding through and bringing a bit of money.”

Spina Bifida is a range of birth defects which affect the spine.

There are treatments for the disease, however there is no known cure.

This year was the 20th year of the Poker Run, and coincided with Spina Bifida Awareness Week.
