Top cop may face charges over Hillsborough

CRIMINAL charges may be laid against former police chief superintendent David Duckenfield, 71, over his role in the 1989 Hillsborough disaster.

A jury in a British inquest has ruled the 96 fans who died in the crush at the FA Cup semi-final were "unlawfully killed" and the match commander, Mr Duckenfield, was "responsible for manslaughter by gross negligence".

The jury exonerated the Liverpool fans Mr Duckenfield and other police blamed for the tragedy.

Police errors had contributed to the tragedy, the jury ruled.
