Silver Ferns put Australia's winning streak to an end

A WORLD record crowd for a netball match saw New Zealand stop Australia's winning streak at 19 with a thoroughly-deserved 52-47 win in their Pool A match at the World Cup in Sydney.

A crowd of 16,233 was on hand to see the Diamonds suffer their first loss since being beaten by the Silver Ferns in Invercargill in September 2013. It was also Australia's first loss in a Netball World Cup since the 2003 final, also against New Zealand.

Both teams went into the match unbeaten in their first two games of the tournament, but it was New Zealand's defence, led brilliantly by Casey Kopua, which forced a string of uncharacteristic errors from the Australians.

Coach Lisa Alexander would not have been impressed at the number of passes into the shooting circle that went astray, allowing the visitors to have 12 more scoring attempts over the course of the match.

At the other end, Silver Ferns shooters Maria Tutaia (34 from 48) and Bailey Mes (18 from 21) had the better of Laura Geitz and Sharni Layton, marking the first time in 21 Tests that Australia had conceded 50 goals or more.

The Diamonds have a day off today and will start the crossover finals tomorrow.
