VIDEO: Seismologist warns to expect a stronger earthquake

UPDATE 12.30PM: A seismologist has warned the Fraser Coast to expect a stronger earthquake after this morning's 5.3 magnitude tremor.

Geoscience Australia duty seismologist Marco Maldoni said history had shown a second shock was likely.

"If there's going to be any further [shocks] we can't say for sure, all we can do it look at the past history," he said.

"You get the initial shock followed by smaller ones but sometimes you get the reverse; you get a foreshock proceeding a larger earthquake."

He said more often than not the larger shock comes first which releases most of the stress from the earth's crust.

"But it does happen on occasion- we don't know."

He said a series of aftershocks could be expected for the next few hours or days.

Updated Geoscience Australia records show two tremors were felt across the Fraser Coast this morning.

The first was a 5.3M tremor at 9.41am, before a second tremor 3.9M was recorded at 9.45am.

Geoscience Australia recorded both to be at a depth of 30km.

11AM: The Fraser Coast Regional Council says it's business as usual at the Fraser Coast Airport.

Mayor Gerard O'Connell said there were no reports of damage in the region.

Kawungan State School have used their Facebook page to urge parents to remain calm.

"There is NO threat of tsunami," the post read.

"There is NO need to pick up children."
