10,000 homes lose power in vicious storms

MORE than 10,000 people across the Western Downs have lost power in the wake of hailstorms that ripped through the region this afternoon.

According to an Ergon energy spokesman, it's not yet safe for crews to assess the damage.

"As soon as it's safe for our crews to head out for restoration works they'll do that," the spokesman said.

Until damage is assessed the spokesman said it's uncertain how long it will take for power to be fully restored.

The spokesman said residents should remember to stay well clear of fallen or damaged power lines, and report them to Ergon by calling 131670.
